Publication Date

Description
Report produced in collaboration between Universities and Commonwealth and State Government agencies. Overview * The Status of key Australian fish stocks reports 2012 provide the first national assessments of the status of key wild capture fish stocks. The reports provide scientifically based stock status assessments for 49 key fish species (or species complexes), which contribute over 80 per cent of the value and 70 per cent of the catch volume from Australian fisheries. * The reports rely on a consistent national reporting framework that was developed collaboratively by fisheries scientists from around Australia. The framework provides transparency and consistency in stock status reporting across jurisdictions. * Stock status assessments are based on the abundance and level of harvest in 2010. In total, 150 stocks were assessed across the 49 key species; 98 stocks were classified as sustainable, these contribute around 90 per cent of the total catch of the 49 species. There were 8 stocks classified as transitional - recovering, 3 as transitional - depleting and 2 as overfished. There were 39 stocks where status was classified as undefined; these stocks contribute 4.5 per cent of the total catch of the 49 species. * The reports were initiated by the FRDC and ABARES and developed collaboratively by ABARES and government fishery research agencies from all states, the Northern Territory and the CSIRO; more than 80 fisheries researchers were involved. * A dedicated website has been developed by FRDC to host the reports (www.fish.gov.au). The hard copies are scheduled for release in January 2013. * This first edition of the reports focuses on the status of the targeted fish stocks; the status classifications do not consider broader ecosystem impacts of fishing, such as bycatch or habitat impacts, or social and economic considerations. These elements may be included in future editions, or companion reports.
