Description
Overview This report provides an annual update of productivity estimates for Australia's broadacre and dairy industries, through to 2015-16. In addition to the standard update of the latest productivity estimates, this report provides additional insights into the beef industry, by analysing the farm size effect on beef productivity. Productivity growth in Australia's agricultural sector is a key measure for assessing industry performance. In the long term, productivity growth reflects a key mechanism by which farmers can increase profits and maintain international competiveness. ABARES publishes productivity estimates over the period 1977-78 to 2015-16 for the broadacre industries, and 1978-79 to 2015-16 for the dairy industry. Key Issues * Over the period 1977-78 to 2015-16, productivity in the broadacre industries grew by 1.1 per cent per year on average. This result was mainly as a result of declining input use (-0.9 per cent a per year), and modest output growth (0.1 per cent per year) * Productivity growth varied significantly across the broadacre industries. Cropping experienced the strongest productivity growth at 1.5 per cent per year, followed by beef (1.2 per cent per year), mixed-crop-livestock (0.9 per cent per year), and sheep (0.2 per cent per year) * In the beef industry, productivity growth rates varied by farm size. Over the period 1977-78 to 2015-16, large farms (defined as having total cash receipts greater than $1 million), experienced productivity growth over 3 times as high as small farms (total cash receipts less than $200,000) * In the dairy industry, productivity growth averaged 1.4 per cent per year over the period 1978-79 to 2015-16. This was a result of a 1.2 per cent increase in output, and a 0.2 per cent per year decline in input use
