Description:
Overview Australian crop report provides high quality and timely information that supports higher farm gate returns through informed decision making by primary producers. In this edition, ABARES will release its first forecast of 2019-20 winter crop production and its latest estimate of summer crop production for 2018-19. Key issues It has been a mixed start to the 2019-20 winter crop season. Above average rainfall in South Australia, Victoria and southern New South Wales during May created favourable planting and growing conditions. However, seasonal conditions in most cropping regions in Western Australia, northern New South Wales and southern Queensland were drier than average throughout autumn. Most cropping regions in Western Australia, northern New South Wales and southern Queensland will be reliant on sufficient and timely rainfall for the development of crops over winter. According to the latest three-month rainfall outlook issued by the Bureau of Meteorology on 30 May 2019, winter rainfall is likely to be average in Western Australia and below average in most other cropping regions. Harvesting of the 2018-19 summer crop is now largely complete. The estimate of total summer crop production is expected to be slightly lower than the forecast presented in the February edition of Australian crop report. Cotton and rice production was slightly lower than forecast.
