Title:
The challenge of reporting drought
Publication Date:
16/06/2003
Description:
When the Wentworth Group of Scientists announced that Australia could not be drought-proofed, they were rushed by the media. The scientists who assumed they were just speaking obvious truths, were astonished by the response. Australia is a highly urbanised, largely migrant nation, and most city people have no real experience of country life. Because most city people learn about the country through the media, how the country is reported can shape city views. Reporters, and their editors, prefer to report conflict and crises, and Australian farming seems to suffer through plenty of them
