Title:
Air Drilling for field measurement of hydrogeological properties, in the Lower Balonne area, Southern Queensland, Australia
Publication Date:
01/03/2003
Description:
The Bureau of Rural Sciences (BRS) produced this report as part of the investigation for the Lower Balonne Airborne Geophysics Project, undertaken in collaboration between the BRS, the Queensland Department of Natural Resources Mines & Energy and the Cooperative Research Centre for Landscape Environments and Mineral Exploration. The project assisted with sustainable land and water management within the southern Queensland Murray-Darling Basin, using a variety of approaches including airborne geophysical techniques supported by hydrogeological, hydrochemical, stratigraphic, geomorphic and geological studies. This report describes how eighteen sites were drilled by air hammer and air rotary in the St George / Dirranbandi area during November 2002. These drill sites served three main purposes: to serve as part of the ground-truthing program for the airborne electromagnetic (AEM) salt mapping; to provide samples for analyses of electrical conductivity over the upper 30 metres of the regolith; and to establish lines of nested bores for permeability-testing, to determine a representative range of permeability values for the different materials in the area
