Title:
Agricultural Commodities: September 2020
Series:
Agricultural commodities
Series Issue:
September quarter 2020
Publication Date:
15/09/2020
Description:
Overview The COVID-19 pandemic has worsened since the last outlook was issued in June and global economic growth prospects have weakened. This is reducing household income in all of Australia's agricultural export markets. As a result, prices are forecast to fall for almost all major agricultural exports. However, production prospects for Australia’s winter crop are positive, with forecasts of a significant turnaround from past drought-affected lows. These same seasonal conditions will create incentives for herd rebuilding in Australia’s livestock sector meaning meat production is expected to fall from previous highs. The net result of these factors will mean that the gross value of agricultural production is likely to remain unchanged in 2020-21 from last year. Despite this, lower meat production, the rebuilding of grain stocks and lower prices will mean the value of agricultural exports is likely to fall significantly.
