Description:
This paper informs national, regional and local policy makers, management agencies and land managers about methods of evaluating vegetation condition to achieve a consistent national approach to vegetation assessment. The assessments indicate the vegetation's capacity to produce goods such as food and timber and services including clean water or wildlife habitat. Indicators for developing an adaptive vegetation management plan include: - the extent and distribution of different vegetation types, their structural features and plant species composition - estimates of growth or health of grasses - the extent of bare ground - and the number of plant or animal species. Vegetation assessments can be made from native vegetation, fodder or carbon dynamics perspectives using reconnaissance surveys; comparative surveys or repeated comparative surveys
