Title:
Australian fisheries - outlook and economic indicators (Conference paper 11.09)
Series:
Conference papers
Series Issue:
11.09
Publication Date:
01/03/2011
Description:
The growth in global aquaculture, particularly in the Asian region, has been a major global trend that has increased competition in global markets for Australian fishers, and import competition in local markets. Also, the strong appreciation of the Australian dollar over the last decade contributed to lower beach prices and a declining trend in the gross value of production. Over the medium term, it is forecast that gross value of fisheries production will increase. Despite this increase, there remains a need to remain focused on achieving maximum economic returns from the use of fishery resources. In order to assess the success of fishery managers against this objective, a range of indicators are available such as net economic returns, productivity analysis, profit decomposition, latency, and quota values, all of which are discussed in this paper. This paper was presented at the 41st Outlook Conference, hosted by ABARES, Canberra,1-2 March 2011
