Water is a scarce resource in Australia. Forests generally use more water than crops and pastures. This can have environmental benefits such as better water quality and reduced salinity erosion and stream siltation. However, there is considerable concern in some quarters about potential impacts of the expanding area of forest plantations on stream flow and water availability to downstream users such as irrigators
