Title:
Understanding the drivers of profitability in Commonwealth fisheries (Technical Report 12.4)
Publication Date:
13/11/2012
Description:
Over the last decade, a number of policy actions have aimed to improve stock sustainability and profitability in Commonwealth fisheries. This paper uses an index number profit decomposition approach to examine trends in the main drivers of profitability in four Commonwealth fishery sectors. The profit decomposition approach allows for the distinction between those drivers of profitability that can be influenced by fisheries management (fish stocks and productivity) and those that fishery managers are unable to influence (output and input prices). The results reveal a strong link between productivity improvements and the Securing Our Fishing Future buyback for most of the fishery sectors analysed.
