Description:
ABARES report is Australia's input into the United Nation Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO's) ongoing assessment and monitoring of global animal genetic resources for food and agriculture. In 2007, Australia, along with 108 delegations from other countries, adopted the Global Plan of Action (GPA) for Animal Genetic Resources and committed to the Interlaken Declaration on Animal Genetic Resources. The prominent theme in both the GPA and Interlaken Declaration is the need to conserve animal genetic resources. Strategic Priority 1 (SP1) of the GPA is to inventory and characterise animal genetic resources; monitor trends in population numbers, identify risks associated with managing the genetic resources, and establish country-based early-warning and response systems. This ABARES report demonstrates Australia's achievements under SP1. The information contained in the report has been entered into the FAO's Domestic Animal Diversity Information System in accordance with an SP1 objective of strengthening global and regional information systems. Key Issues * Nearly all Australian livestock production relies on exotic species. Cattle, sheep, pigs and chickens constitute the majority of production value and native species such as emus and crocodiles are farmed to a small extent. Kangaroos and feral animals also form the basis of wild harvest industries. * The exotic animals and their reproductive material (sperm, eggs and embryos) that constitute farm animal genetic resources, can be traded internationally within the limits of biosecurity policy. Responsibility for conservation and management of the genetic resources in Australia lies with industries and individual owners. The genetic resources of relevant native species cannot be exported for commercial purposes under Australian law.
