Description:
Overview This issue of the Australian forest and wood products statistics (AFWPS) includes 2017-18 data for key domestic indicators of forestry sector activity, including Australia's commercial plantation estate, volume and value of logs harvested, wood products production and trade. This issue also presents updated quarterly data for dwelling unit commencements for the September and December quarters of 2018. Key Issues Business conditions remained favourable for Australia's forestry sector in 2017-18 despite small declines in log harvest volumes and wood processing industry output. The total volume of logs harvested (from commercial plantations and native production forests) in 2017-18 remains high at 32.9 million cubic metres, down 1 per cent from the record high 2016-17 log harvest of 33.2 million cubic metres but 44 per cent higher than five years ago. The gross value of total logs harvested in 2017-18 reached a record high of $2.7 billion (mill door prices), up 4 per cent from 2016-17 and driven by values of hardwood and softwood commercial plantation harvests. The strong export performance of Australia's wood products industries in recent years continued in 2017-18, with the total value of wood product exports increasing to $3.6 billion, up 4 per cent from the previous year and up 76 per cent since 2012-13. This result was driven by higher export values (and volumes) of woodchips, softwood roundwood logs and hardwood roundwood logs, which all reached record highs in 2017-18. The total value of wood product imports increased in 2017-18 to $5.6 billion, up 8 per cent from the previous year. This result was driven by higher import values of miscellaneous forest products and wood-based panels (both of which reached record highs in 2017-18) and sawnwood. In 2017-18, Australia's production of sawnwood declined to 4.6 million cubic metres, down 2 per cent from the previous year, due to decreases in both softwood sawnwood (down 1 per cent) and hardwood sawnwood (down 6 per cent). Production of paper and paperboard also decreased slightly to 3.2 million tonnes, down 0.3 per cent. Dwelling commencements increased in 2017-18 to 229,500 dwellings, up 4 per cent from the previous year. This growth was due to a 5 per cent increase in the number of new houses and a 2 per cent increase in new other residential buildings, such as units and apartments. In the first half of 2018-19, dwelling commencements decreased to 114,400 dwellings, down 7 per cent from the corresponding first six months of 2017-18. This result was due to a 4 per cent decrease in new houses and a 10 per cent decrease in new other residential buildings.
