Series:
Australian Forest and Wood Products Statistics
Series Issue:
November 2013
Publication Date:
20/11/2013
Description:
This issue of the Australian Forest and Wood Products Statistics (AFWPS) includes updated Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) trade data for the March and June quarters of 2013, as well as 2012-13 data for housing and forestry employment. This release also includes a summary of the recently released ABARES report titled Illegal logging regulation: the affected community Key Issues * In 2012-13, the value of wood product imports fell by 2 per cent to $4.1 billion and exports fell by 8.3 per cent to $2 billion, compared with the previous year. Australia's trade deficit in wood products remained relatively unchanged at $2.1 billion. * The decrease in value of total wood product imports was primarily driven by falls in the value of sawnwood and panel imports. However, the rebound in Australia's housing activity in 2012-13 is expected to increase sawnwood consumption and may lead to an increase in imports in the next financial year. * The value of paper and paperboard imports remained relatively unchanged at around $2 billion. Imports of tissue paper and packaging paper increased in 2012-13 offsetting declines in imports of newsprint and printing and writing grades of paper. * The decrease in value of exports in 2012-13 was primarily driven by a substantial reduction in woodchip exports, although declines in export value were also evident in most other major Australian wood products exports - particularly wood-based panels and roundwood. * Exports of paper and paperboard overtook woodchip exports for the first time in 2012-13 to become Australia's major wood product export in terms of value. * The total value of woodchip exports declined by 16 per cent during the year, and paper exports remained resilient at above $700 million for the third year running. * The fall in woodchip exports was primarily driven by reductions in the volume and value of hardwood woodchip exports; over the last 5 years, the value of hardwood woodchip exports had decreased by 42 per cent. This trend may reflect competitive conditions in global woodchip markets with Australia facing tough competition from woodchip exporters in Asia and South America. * Total employment in forestry and logging as well as wood product manufacturing industries decreased in 2012-13 from a total of around 66 700 in 2011-12 to around 64 000 in 2012-13.
