Description:
Overview In 2011, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) commissioned ABARES to collect survey data for the three financial years to 2012-13 to enable the costs of grain production to be indentified separately from other farm enterprise costs. This report provides a summary of the results for the three years to 2012-13 at a national level and by GRDC region (Western, Northern and Southern regions). Key Issues * Since the late 1970s, there have been fewer but larger farms and the intensity of production (measured by the area planted to grains as a proportion of the total area operated) has increased. One of the factors driving this change is that larger and more intensive grain growing farms are able to achieve lower unit costs of production. * ABARES survey of the cash costs of grain production shows that average costs per tonne decline as the area planted to grains increases until around 300 hectares are planted to grain. After this point, average cash costs per tonne remain relatively constant. * The trend of increasing area sown to grain crops per farm has differed between regions, with a much higher rate of increase in the Western region than in the Northern or Southern regions. Differences in realised cash costs per tonne of grain produced between the three regions partly reflect the differing crop yields and quantities of grain produced.
