Description:
The report is a quarterly report with a consistent and regular assessment of crop prospects for major field crops, forcasts of area, yield and production and a summary of seasonal conditions on a state by state basis. Key Issues: * Prospects for total Australian winter crop production in 2013-14 have improved although regional outcomes are expected to vary significantly. * Winter crop production is forecast to increase in Western Australia, Victoria and South Australia, while it is expected to fall in New South Wales and Queensland. * In Western Australia, Victoria and South Australia, seasonal conditions have been relatively supportive, leading to an improvement in prospective yields. * In New South Wales and Queensland, hot and dry seasonal conditions during spring followed unfavourable seasonal conditions over winter. Crops in southern Queensland and many parts of New South Wales were also adversely affected by frost events. * Total Australian winter crop production is forecast to rise by 12 per cent in 2013–14 to around 42.1 million tonnes. This is an upward revision of around 3 million tonnes from ABARES September forecast. * For the major winter crops, wheat production is forecast to increase by 17 per cent to around 26.2 million tonnes and barley production is forecast to rise by 15 per cent to around 8.6 million tonnes. In contrast, canola production is forecast to fall by 15 per cent to around 3.4 million tonnes. However, if realised this would still be the third largest canola crop on record. * Planting of 2013-14 summer crops began in late September 2013 and is expected to be completed by February 2014. The hot and dry seasonal conditions over winter and spring in northern New South Wales.
