Description:
This paper presents information on ABARES current commodities outlook and the recent financial performance of a number of key agricultural industries in Tasmania. In particular, survey results on the performance of beef, sheep and dairy farms in Tasmania are compared with national performance. A brief overview of the Tasmanian forestry and fisheries industry is also provided. The outlook for commodities is based on data published in the September 2011 edition of ABARES quarterly report, Agricultural commodities. The farm performance data for the local region are drawn from the ABARES farm surveys database. The paper was presented at ABARES Regional Outlook conference, Launceston, Tasmania, 28 September 2011. Key Issues Tasmanian broadacre farm cash incomes (receipts less cash expenses) are estimated to have increased to an average of $80 000 per farm in 2010-11, which is around 35 per cent above the average (in real terms) for the 10 years to 2009-10. On average, receipts for beef cattle are estimated to have risen in 2010-11 due to higher beef cattle prices. Average receipts from wool are also estimated to have increased in 2010-11 due to higher wool prices. Average farm cash costs are estimated to have declined slightly on Tasmanian broadacre farms in 2010-11, due to the effects of a reduction in beef cattle purchases as well as a reduction in expenditure on fodder. Farm cash incomes of Tasmanian dairy farms are estimated to have improved in 2010-11 to average $105 000 per farm, which is around 4 per cent below the average (in real terms) for the 10 years to 2009-2010
