Drought impacts on broadacre and dairy farms in South-Eastern Australia
Series:
Research reports

Publication Date:

Description:
Overview The aim of this report is to provide preliminary results from ABARES recently completed surveys of broadacre and dairy farms into the public domain. The report examines changes over time in average farm incomes among broadacre and dairy farms in South-Eastern Australia. South Eastern Australia is defined as Queensland below 24 degrees latitude, and all of NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Within this broader region, results are further broken up by state and industry (grains, sheep, beef and dairy). Note that detailed updated results from the broadacre and dairy surveys covering all states and territories will be released, as usual, at the ABARES Outlook conference in March 2019. Key Issues ABARES most recent surveys of broadacre and dairy farms have collected detailed information on the physical and financial performance of farms during the 2017-18 financial year, along with projections of key variables for the 2018-19 financial year. Given the drought situation in eastern Australia, ABARES is keen to provide timely information from this survey as soon as possible. To this end we have produced a short report containing early estimates of key financial variables for farms in South-Eastern Australia. These preliminary results confirm that average farm incomes in South-Eastern Australia are likely to decline significantly in 2018-19, but will remain above the levels experienced during the 2002-03 and 2006-07 droughts. However, there is considerable variability across different regions and industries. The final results for 2018-19 will also depend to some extent on summer cropping outcomes in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales. This new report complements recent ABARES commentary on farm performance and the impacts of drought contained in our most recent Australian Commodities report, and our Insights report into the 2018 drought.
