Description:
This paper contains ABARES' estimates of annual productivity growth in the Australian broadacre and dairy industries. It also makes available estimates of growth in partial factor productivity and input use for major input categories (land, capital, labour, materials and services). ABARES' estimates indicate that productivity in the broadacre industries has grown at an average rate of 1 per cent a year between 1977-78 and 2010-11, while dairy productivity growth has averaged 1.6 per cent a year over the same period. Overall resource use in most industries has declined over the long term, contributing to gains in productivity. An increase in production intensity in most industries has also boosted productivity. The paper also considers the changing sources of productivity growth and discusses the implications for policy. ABARES finds that broadacre productivity growth has slowed due to a range of factors such as drought, reduced public investment in research and development, and diminishing benefits from key market reforms and technological advances. Growth has also been increasingly underpinned by gains in livestock industries, while growth in cropping industries has declined. Although Australia has maintained its productivity and competitiveness against key competitors over the long term, past productivity growth rates may be challenging to maintain, underscoring the importance of continued advances in farming practices and technologies
