Description:
Overview * In 2019-20 the national value of farm production is forecast to decline by 5% to $59 billion. * 2018-19 production is revised higher to $62.2 billion, but in real terms remains well below the record set in 2016-17. This revision was driven by higher than expected slaughter from drought affected regions. * Net farm cash income is forecast to fall for the 3rd consecutive year. * The volume of farm production is forecast to fall and is expected to hit levels last seen during the millennium drought - although it remains well above the worst years of that period. * In 2019-20 export earnings are forecast to fall by 11% to $43.6 billion, driven by reduced exports from both the livestock and cropping sectors. * Broad-based falls are expected in livestock exports. Ongoing reductions in herd sizes are beginning to affect the productive capacity of the sector, and wool prices have fallen quickly and returned to longer term average levels. * Crop exports are expected to fall overall, with cotton, sugar and pulse exports down. Wheat, barley and canola exports are forecast to grow in 2019-20. * Downside risks to Australian agriculture include a continuation of dry conditions as well as disruptions to international markets stemming from trade disputes.
