Title:
Enabling technologies in agriculture - tackling food security and sustainability
Publication Date:
26/09/2011
Description:
Poster outlining an analysis of enabling technologies that could help Australian agriculture better meet the future demands of food security with sustainability. Key Issues * Australia can contribute to the global food supply by maintaining productive agricultural systems while at the same time improving the sustainability of those systems. * The poster presents a summary of enabling technologies that could help Australian agriculture increase production from its cropping systems while improving their sustainability. To achieve sustainable crop production requires advances in: plant breeding, information technology/automation processes, farming system design and the effective integration of these innovations. * Relevant policy responses include increased funding for research, extension and education, and a role for government in supporting a whole-of-system approach to sustainable agriculture. * Research, development and extension needs to be strategic and have a focus on information exchange between scientific researchers, farmers and those in between. The new technologies and applications relevant to agriculture in the near future are expected to be compatible with current Australian regulatory frameworks. * Within the international context, Australia can contribute most effectively to global food security by supporting liberalisation of international trade in agricultural commodities, increasing targeted development aid and sharing knowledge and expertise of the application of new technologies in agriculture.
